Sewing the Seeds of Atomic Habits with the New Spring Equinox
Good Morning Team BN,
Katherine here, founder of BN. I want to start by wishing you a very happy Saturday/ weekend and Spring Equinox 2021.
The Spring Equinox marks the first day of spring, occurring when the sun passes the equator moving from the southern to the northern hemisphere. I absolutely love this time of year. The North Pole begins to lean toward the sun again and day and night become equal in length. Spring Equinox is the astrological new year and the perfect time to set new intentions and sew the seeds of life long manifestations.
Sewing the Seeds of Success
Last night I began to read Atomic habits by James Clear and wanted to recommend both this book and it's teachings.
The philosophy so perfectly ties into the teachings of BN. The overarching principle is that small, consistent change lead to profound and lasting effects which will often to others look like "overnight success". James explores how to optimise the 1% for compounded results.
He breaks down goal setting, to the goal itself, the systems in place that lead to achieving a goal and the belief systems behind the systems that allow us to reach our goals, or not.
He challenges us to flip the focus from obsessing about the outcome, which often comes with an "I'll be happy when mentality" to looking at our belief systems.
So often we get caught up in the outcome that we want to achieve, such as "I want to loose weight", " I want to be fluent in French", " I want to be a musician" that the goal itself always seems to be in front of us, a moving target that is never quite reached.
James prompts us to instead of focusing on the outcome, such as "I want to write a book", to ask ourselves questions such as:
Who is the type of person that could write a book?
-They are likely disciplined and consistent in their writing.
What would a healthy person do?
- They likely opt for the healthy option most of the time
What does a person in a financially healthy position look like?
Chances are, they live within their means, spend less than they earn and save.
Who is the type person that could run a start up look like?
Who is the kind of person that could create political impact?
Adapt these types of questions to fit your own goals in health, wealth, relationships and so on.
When you arrive at the answers to these questions, begin to identify as that. I.E I am disciplined, consistent. When you adopt "this is the person I am mentality" watch life change!
Hitting the Belief System
Here at Beautifully Nourished, when readers come to us with an ambition such as wanting to lose weight, our response is typically to shift the focus from the desired outcome to the belief system. This is undoubtably where change happens.
When a person shifts their belief from "I am a person needing to change" to "I am a person that loves my body". Choices, change as a natural result. That person will begin reaching for the healthier option, more of the time, out of love for their body and wanting to put good things inside of it. Good thoughts, good food....This is because "I am a person that loves my body" forms part of a persons identity. They will subsequently choose choices in line with that identity.
The Power of Language
Switch up the language. If you are a person that wants to run a marathon, you are now not a "person that wants to run a marathon". You are a runner.
This may feel uncomfortable at first, but stick with it.
When you begin to shift the believe system, the beliefs will become apart of your identity, adopted by your psyche. Your larger goals will become a natural side affects as the change in belief system will create a knock on affect changing the systems/ processes involved with achieving the goals.
I can't wait to hear your stories and how you get on! I highly recommend this book to you. I am just a chapter in and already hooked. You are so welcome to write to me at firstname.lastname@example.org I will reply and get back to you, personally.
