Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol): The health benefits of Vitamin D3 are vast. Vitamin D3 has been proven to contribute to the normal function of the immune system.
How it Works
Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) is converted in the liver to calcifediol. Calcifediol is then further processed by the kidneys and some of the immune system cells in the body to form calcitriol.
FUN FACT: Calcitriol is the biologically active form of vitamin D.
Calcitriol circulates as a hormone in the blood, having a major role regulating the concentration of key nutrients such as magnesium, calcium and phospahte, promoting the healthy growth of teeth, bone and muscle. Calcitriol also has effects on cell growth, neuromuscular and immune functions, and can reduce inflammation in the body.
Vitamin D, About: Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that promotes the absorption of calcium, regulates bone growth and plays a role in immune function. It can help to fight disease, provide a feel good factor, strengthen bones through better absorption of vitamins and minerals such as calcium, promote heart health and aid better sleep.
Our skin produces vitamin D when it’s exposed to sunlight, however during the winter months, when we are unable to do this regularly "It is important to take vitamin D when you may be indoors more”. NHS.co.uk
Is vitamin D3 the same as vitamin D? Yes, Vitamin D3, or cholecalciferol, is one of the forms of vitamin D.
Vitamin D3 Supplement: Vitamin D comes in two main forms:
- Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol)
- Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol)
Vitamin D3 is only found in animal food source products, whereas Vitamin D2 is cheaper to produce and comes from plant sources as fortified foods.
Vitamin D3 VS. Vitamin D2: Vitamin D2 and D3 are not equal when it comes to raising your vitamin D status. Both are effectively absorbed into the bloodstream, however are metabolised differently within the liver. Vitamin D2 yields less of the compound calcifediol compared with an equal amount of vitamin D3.
Most studies show that vitamin D3 is more effective than vitamin D2 at raising blood levels of calcifediol. When you are looking to supplement with Vitamin D, during the non winter months, opt for Vitamin D3 over and above vitamin D2 where possible.
Beautifully Nourished's Vitamin D3 is suitable for vegetarians, however is not suitable for vegans.
The benefits of vitamin D3 supplements include: Aswell as supporting the immune system, Vitamin D3 contributes to normal blood calcium levels, has a role in the process of cell division and helps to maintain bones, teeth and muscle.
What vitamin D3 is good for? Vitamin D helps regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body. These nutrients are needed to keep bones, teeth and muscles healthy.
Vitamin D3 dosage: Do not take more than 100 micrograms (4,000 IU) of vitamin D a day.
When to take vitamin D3: From early spring to the end of September (UK), most people should be able to make all the vitamin D they need from sunlight (nhs.co.uk).
Between October and early March we do not make enough vitamin D from sunlight and supplementation should be considered.
It may be beneficial to take your Vitamin D3 supplement alongside healthy fats such as those found within avocado to support absorption.
